Trade Dollars were first minted in 1873 and were intended for use overseas, especially in the Orient.  They contain slightly more silver than the standard U.S. silver dollar.  This additional silver content allowed Trade Dollars to compete well with other foreign coins that were being used for commerce in the Orient.  Trade Dollars were also used as legal currency in the U.S. until 1876 when Congress revoked their status.  Trade Dollars are unique because of their larger size and are highly sought-after by collectors.
