1978 Suzuki GS-550cc original vintage advertisement.
DESCRIPTION:
GS-550 now comes two ways: Fast and Sassy.
Suzuki’s sassy new GS-550E is a GS-550 of-another color. Namely, black.
Besides a racy paint job, the "E” also sports mag-style wheels, plush step-style custom seat and hefty disc brakes front and rear.
Other than those items, both GS-550 models are equipped alike. Which is to say, they’re well-equipped.
Both get their kick from a 4-cylinder Dual Overhead Cam engine. Which delivers continuous power from lst-gear crawling to 6th-gear flying.
Four 22mm Mikuni carbs provide perfect feeding habits for the beast.
As you might-expect, the 4-stroke powerhouse is quick (it’s quarter times are in the 13-second bracket). Which is good to know when you’re passing say. a fat truck on a skinny road.
Handling for both models can best be described as sweet. Chalk that up to lightweight design and low center of gravity. 4-into-2 exhaust pipes ride high to provide maximum lean in corners. Bumps are sopped up by double-dampened
front forks and rear shocks with five load- -settings.
Other high standards include a self-adjusting cam chain tensioner. Combination ignition and steering lock. And easy-to read (day or night) instrumentation such as a digital gear indicator and a tach that redlines at a whopping 9500 rpm.
So you see, these GS-550 mid-rangers are two of a kind.
And that’s double-trouble for the other guys.
