FILM NOIR 2 Rare 1940s CORNELL WOOLRICH Pressbooks – Uncut!Offered here are two rare pressbooks from 1940s noir films that used Cornell Woolrich (aka William Irish) works as their source material. Perhaps even more than Raymond Chandler or James M. Cain it was Woolrich it provided the fatalistic tone and dark atmosphere that came to characterize film noir in its golden age. PHANTOM LADY, DEADLINE AT DAWN, BLACK ANGEL, FEAR IN THE NIGHT, NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES, THE WINDOW are just a few of the classics based on his work.
Here are pressbooks from two of the rarer Woolrich titles:
STREET OF CHANCE (1942) is one of the earliest films in the noir canon. Burgess Meredith stars as “Frank Thompson”, almost killed by debris falling from a building. But he suffers from amnesia and must find out what happened to a missing year of his life, and may be involved with murder. Claire Trevor co-stars in this tale of urban angst and displacement. With Louise Platt, Sheldon Leonard and Frieda Inescort and directed by Jack Hively.
The pressbook measures 12 ¼ x 15. It’s 12 pages, uncut, unfolded and in very fine condition.
I WOULDN’T BE IN YOUR SHOES (1948) is another tale of an innocent man accused of murder. When a down-on-his-luck dancer (Don Castle) tosses his shoes out the window, someone uses them to murder a local miser and Don is framed. In a desperate attempt to clear him, his wife (Elyse Knox) turns to a cop (Regis Toomey) who has a romantic interest in her. This gritty little Monogram B features solid direction by William Nigh and a screenplay from noir regular Steve Fischer (DEAD RECKONING, LADY IN THE LAKE). It’s now considered a top B noir.
The pressbook is 12 x 18 and 8 pages. There is a very light crossfold. It is uncut but has a 1-inch on the lower left at the spine (at Toomey's hat) that extends through all the pages. It’s not too bad. Overall it is in very good condition.
